Established in 1783, Waterford Crystal is the county's most profiled business, renowned world-wide as one of the premier producers of fine hand crafted crystal. Covering a site area of 40 acres, Waterford Crystal employs over 1600 people. The urban areas of Waterford have highly developed retail and business services sectors. Other county industries include general and precision engineering, the manufacturing of building components and milling. A productive agricultural base in Waterford of dairy, cereal and poultry farming has given rise to a significant meat, food and cheese production industry. The overseas companies of Smithkline Beecham, Bausch & Lomb, Allied Signal and Hasbro all have operations in Waterford, prompted by the excellent local port and shipping facilities.

County Waterford is only 1 hour away from Rosslare ferryport and 1 hours from Ringaskiddy ferryport in Cork. Direct flights to the UK operate from Waterford Airport daily. International flights from Dublin Airport are 2 hours away by road. Irish Rail (Iarnrod Eireann) run mainline trains through the county with links to Dublin, Rosslare and Limerick. Bus Eireann operate a local bus service from Waterford City to Tramore. The national bus expressway routes also serve the county. Trunk roads pass through Waterford, providing efficient links between towns.
