A colourful
seaside town with miles of sandy beaches on the
N71, Clonakilty was founded by Richard Boyle and
is a Bord Failte designated Heritage town. The
West Cork Regional Museum is located here and
offers a wonderful insight into the fascinating
history of this picturesque town. Clonakilty
is well served by buses from Cork and is easily
found by following the main N71 from Cork,
however, if time allows, take the superb coast
road route, taking in Timoleague and
Courtmacsherry. The scenery is spectacular and
the area along the way is steeped in history
including some stone circle monuments probably
dating back to the earliest Bronze Age settlers.
The population
is approximately 2,700. The environs of the town
are mostly concerned with agriculture, and there
is a thriving tourist industry and many light
industrial operations in the town itself.
Clonakilty also has the only model village in
Ireland.
