Portlaoise
(population 9,474) is the county town of Laois.
It is 52 miles south west of Dublin, on the main road to Limerick
and Cork. A new bypass keeps the large volumes of through traffic
away from the town.
Attractions
The
Rock of Dunamase, 6 kilometres east of Portlaoise, is a limestone
hill covered with the remains of fortifications dating back
to the thirteenth century.
Heywood Gardens
The neoclassical Ballyfin House (1821).
Amenities
The
Heath Golf Club is six miles north east of Portlaoise.
The town also has a swimming pool.
Transport
There
are buses every hour to Dublin, and there are at least 11 trains
a day.
