Sligo
(population 18,509) is situated where the Garavogue River runs
into Sligo Harbour on the north west coast of Ireland.
Attractions
Sligo
County Museum & Municipal Art Gallery on Stephen Street
contains, among other things, a room dedicated to William Butler
Yeats. Yeats was strongly attached to County Sligo during his
lifetime, and his grave is in nearby Drumcliff.
The ruins of Sligo Abbey are on Abbey Street. The Abbey was
originally founded for the Dominicans in the 13th century.
The Victorian courthouse on Teeling Street, which is still in
use.
Yeats
Memorial Building, home of the Yeats International Summer School
(+353 71 42693) and Sligo Art Gallery (+353 71 45847), is on
the western side of the river at Hyde Bridge.
The Sligo Arts Festival takes place during the first two weeks
of September.
Amenities
The
horse racing track on Cleaveragh Road will hold meetings on
April 30, July 2, August 8-9, and August 22 in 2001.
County Sligo Golf Club (+353 71 77134) is in nearby Rosses Point,
and Strandhill Golf Club (+353 71 68188) is 8 kilometres west
of Sligo.
Sligo Swimming Pool on Markievicz Road.
There is also a Blue Flag beach at Rosses Point.
Transport
Sligo
Airport (+353 71 68280), 8 kilometres west of Sligo at Strandhill,
has daily flights to Dublin.
There are four Bus Éireann buses to Dublin each day.
There are three trains a day to Dublin.
