The
picturesque town of Claremorris sits in the south east of the
beautiful County of Mayo. This town of around 3,000 people is
set amongst a stunning backdrop of rivers, lakes and woodlands.
The bustling, vibrant town of Claremorris has much to offer including
a rich history, ancient relics, stunning surrounding countryside
and a warm, welcoming community.
Local features of historical importance include Ballinasmall Abbey
which housed a Carmelite community for over 600 years until 1870
when it closed it's doors having supplied many of the priests
who took Christianity to the New World..
Another famous landmark is Mount St. Michael built by the Kirwan
family in the early 18th century. The Kirwan family lost the house
after the 1798 rebellion when it was taken over by Denis Browne,
the "hanging sheriff" of Claremorris. The Kirwan family name continues
to be world renown as part of what are now referred to as the
"wine geese". Chateau Kirwan is now a very well established and
highly respected Bordeaux wine. Mount St. Michael now operates
as a school for the girls of the Claremorris area.
Claremorris is blessed with superb natural amenities, including
the stunning Clare Lake and McMahon Park. This gem was retrieved
from the clutches of industrial pollution some twenty years ago
and with a great deal of work and willpower from the local community,
the whole area was turned into what is today a showpiece national
park.
Man made facilities are also abundant in the area with a splendid
swimming pool, a Tom Craddock designed 18 hole golf course, riding
stables and an abundance of pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes
and pockets.
The very active local business community is spearheaded by an
enthusiastic Chamber of Commerce committed to local business development.
All major financial institutions are represented in the town and
business advice and assistance is available from the Mayo County
Enterprise Board and Enterprise Ireland.
