The historical
town of Castlebar is the county town seat of Mayo
with a population of some 7,500 people.
Established in the 11th century around the De
Barra castle, Castlebar later became a garrison
outpost during the Irish and French rebellion in
the late 18th century. Renowned as birth place to
inventor Louis Brennan and soprano Margaret
Sheridan, Castlebar boasts of important
historical landmark sites and monuments which
commemorate its rich heritage through the ages. Modern
day Castlebar offers a wonderful array of
interesting shops and leisure attractions to
visitors to the region. The Sculpture Trail is a
series of bronze, stone, steel, timber works of
art in the town centre. Castlebar is host to a
range of festivals throughout the year including
exhibitions at the Linenhall Arts Centre, the
Blues Festival in June, Celebration of the Senses
in October and the Portwest Castlebar
International Four Day Walks event over the
stunning countryside of mountains and broad bogs
of Mayo.
Anglers will not
be disappointed with some of the best fishing in
Connaught nearby with an abundance of lakes and
waterways all within a twenty minute drive from
the town. Castlebar's flagship leisure and
accommodation centre, Lough Lannagh Village, is
set within a mature landscape with a lakeside
view of the majestic mountain, Croagh Patrick.
The township of Castlebar offers all sports
facilities including an 18 hole golf championship
course as well as par three courses and driving
ranges, the highlight being the Castlebar Golf
Clubs Open Week in June.
Having won a
place in the Telecom Information Age Town
Competition in 1997, Castlebar has become a
leader in the provision of internet services to
the populous of the town. An extensive community
based website at www.castlebar.ie carries all
local information, local news and events. This
initiative has promoted e-commerce into the
businesses of Castlebar and encouraged the
community at large to utilize the facilities of
the internet including e-mail communication. The
township of Castlebar has embraced this
opportunity and has pioneered the success of the
Castlebar Server.
Castlebar has
plenty of excellent accommodation from country
house hotels and bed and breakfast to caravan and
camping park facilities. Rich in Irish culture,
art, entertainment and restaurants, Castlebar is
well worth a visit for its warm hospitality to
both tourist and business traveler. Accessible by
road, train and air, Castlebar is the gateway
town to the beautiful and unspoiled county of
Mayo.
