County Leitrim
is home to the Shannon-Erne Waterway - 750km of restored canal
and idyllic clear lakes in the north west of Ireland. Providing
water sport enthusiasts with a haven of sailing and cruising
barge holidays, the River Shannon is one of Ireland's premier
boating destinations.
With only a two
mile coastline on Donegal Bay, Leitrim is primarily an inland
county with a landscape of forested drumlins, waterways and
secluded glens over some 600 square miles - popular with cyclists
and hill walkers alike.
Visitors to County Leitrim can enjoy landmark attractions including
Parke's Castle, the Cavan Leitrim Steam Train Museum and the
magical Glencar Waterfall. The county also offers excellent
fishing with all year coarse angling at Lough Allen and wild
salmon and trout fishing across the north Leitrim lakes.
Derived from the Irish name, Liath Druim, meaning grey ridge,
Leitrim maintains much of its Irish heritage through traditional
music, theatre and local festivals throughout the county. Home
to over 25,000 people, Leitrim is one of Ireland's most unspoiled
and picturesque counties.
