Carrick-on-Shannon
(population 1,868) is situated in southwest Leitrim on the border
with Roscommon.
It is Leitrim's county capital and largest town and a major
boating centre. It is often the starting point for cruises and
fishing trips on the River Shannon.
Attractions
The
Costello Memorial Chapel (1877), at the top of Bridge Street,
is reputed to be one of the smallest chapels in the world. Measuring
5 metres by 3.6 metres, it was built to hold the remains of
businessman Edward Costello and his wife.
Amenities
Boats
of all sizes can be hired for pottering about or for a longer
cruise.
Geraghty's on Main Street hires out rods and tackle and bikes,
and the tourist office's Visitor's Guidebook provides details
of suggested cycling tours.
Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Club is 8 kilometres north west of Carrick
on the road to Boyle (N4). Tel. (079) 67015.
There is plenty of Bed & Breakfast accommodation, a hostel
is open in the summer, and there is free camping on the riverbank
near the Marina, where the showers can be used.
Transport
Four
Bus Éireann buses a day travel between Sligo and Dublin
via Carrick-on-Shannon. There is an additional bus running between
Sligo and Carrick-on-Shannon.
There are three trains a day to both Dublin and Sligo.
