We are looking for charitable donations to restore St. Coman's Church of Ireland (Anglican) in Roscommon town, Ireland. A joint venture between St. Coman's Church of Ireland Community and the Roscommon Heritage Group plans to restore the church bell and clock for the Millennium. We are a small community with only eleven families in the parish and rely on a visiting Rector.

The Roscommon Heritage Group is a group of interested people from all parts of the Town Community, who seek to retain, record and restore the historic buildings of this old Town and its environment.

The Church is built on the reputed site of St. Coman's Abbey which flourished in the 7th century A.D. and the site was later that of an Abbey of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine. The present Church is about 300 years old and the southern wing was added in the 1880's. Some of the stone, particularly the stonework of the blocked doorway at the back and the windows on the upper part of the Tower, date from the 12th century, and possibly came from the original Augustinian Abbey.

The Clock was repaired in Dublin in 1830 and re-erected in 1832. It had a long pendulum and clockwork mechanism which had to be rewound at frequent intervals.

The Cross of Cong was designed here to contain a relic of the True Cross given by the Pope to Turlough Mor, King of Connaught in 1123 A.D. This Reliquary was hidden in Cong, County Mayo, from the Penal Times until found in the early 1800's. It is made of gold filigree with inset gem stones. It is now one of the greatest treasures of the National Museum.

The restoration of the Church Clock and Bell would cost in the region of £6,000 Irish Punts. Corporate donations qualify for Tax Relief at the Company's marginal rate of tax.

Please help us restore this historic beautiful church to it's original state.
